City Officials Create Opportunity, Control Deer Populations

COSHOCTON, OH – 2007 will mark the third year that hunters will have the opportunity to archery hunt within the Coshocton city limits, according to Coshocton city officials and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

“Controlling urban deer populations is an issue that many cities face throughout Ohio,” stated Mark Hemming, wildlife management supervisor for southeast Ohio. “The city of Coshocton is setting a great example of pro-active urban deer management, providing opportunity to both sportsmen and landowners.”

This year’s archery hunt within the Coshocton city limits will be considered a controlled hunt. Controlled hunt permits are available from the Coshocton City Service Director. For those hunting the city of Coshocton controlled hunt, the new $15 antlerless deer tag will be valid until February 3, 2008.

Although hunting within the city limits is allowed with landowner permission and the proper licenses and permits, related city ordinances will remain in effect. The laws still state that hunting will be allowed with archery equipment only, and no bow shall be discharged within 100 yards of an occupied building.

The ordinance allowing hunting within the city limits was effective for the first time in 2005, lifting a ban on hunting within city limits which had been in place for more than 45 years.

All State wildlife regulations are in effect along with all applicable city ordinances during the 2007 archery season, which began on September 29 and ends February 3, 2008. A detailed listing of deer hunting rules is contained in the 2007-2008 Ohio Hunting Regulations available where licenses are sold, or online at www.wildohio.com
