EDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO BE RECOGNIZED AS WILD SCHOOL SITE

COLUMBUS, OH – Edgewood Elementary School in Marysville will be dedicated as a WILD School Site by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife on Thursday, September 27th and 9:30 a.m. at the school grounds.

The WILD School Site program was established by the ODNR Division of Wildlife in 1994 to encourage schools to take action in order to improve their school yard habitat for wildlife while using the site to learn lessons in the many subjects of their curriculum. Since then 84 school sites statewide have been certified, with Edgewood Elementary becoming the 85th and the sixth in Union County.

The students and staff at Edgewood have participated in an ongoing beautification project called the Legacy Project which benefits the students by creating opportunities for them to better understand the needs of Ohio’s wildlife.  The project not only creates a more pleasant school ground but also provides much needed wildlife habitat.  The students are involved in each step of the planning and implementation of the project.

All of the projects have served as a basis for various classroom lessons, a main component of the WILD School Sites program.  Science, math, and language arts are highlighted through the Legacy Project.

Many groups and individuals have had a part in making the Legacy Project a success.  The Scotts Company donated many supplies to the school and representatives will be on-hand at the certification ceremony.

A WILD School Site dedication ceremony will serve as recognition for the teachers’ and students’ hard work.
