Indian Lake
Originally constructed in the 1850s as a feeder lake for the Miami and Erie Canal, Indian Lake in northwest Logan County is very popular among recreational boaters and anglers. Map
The 5,800-acre lake is Ohio’s third largest inland lake and provides the headwaters of the Great Miami River. Once known as a highly popular resort area in the Midwest a century ago, Indian Lake still retains its popularity today as a great place to live and to enjoy boating, fishing and camping.
The lake features 30 miles of shoreline, five public boat launch ramps and more than 500 seasonal docks. A privately-owned marine dealer also is located on the lake.
Boats with unlimited horsepower may operate on Indian Lake, though boaters must observe a 10 mile per hour speed limit lakewide between sunset and sunrise. Popular with owners of boats of all types, including sailboats and pontoon boats, Indian Lake is one of the few lakes that offers enhanced nighttime boating opportunities with a system of lighted navigational aids.
The lake attracts many types of boating activities that include sailing, canoeing, power cruising, fishing and swimming. There are four designated boat and swim areas, plus two additional public beach areas situated within Indian Lake State park. The average depth of the lake ranges from 4 to 6 feet.
Indian Lake is very popular among anglers seeking bass, crappies, bluegills, saugeyes and catfish. It is a popular site for summer bass tournaments and also an excellent area to view migrating waterfowl and other birds. Hunting by licensed hunters is permitted within designated areas during the open hunting seasons.
Indian Lake is located near U.S. Route 33 approximately ten miles northwest of Bellefontaine in Logan County, 60 miles northwest of Columbus, 60 miles north of Dayton and 80 miles south of Toledo.
