Great Lakes Basin Compact Now Awaits Approval by Congress
All eight states in the Great Lakes region have ratified the Great Lakes Basin Compact, which is meant to maintain water quality and protect water resources. The legislation, co-sponsored by Senator George Voinovich, now awaits the approval from the U.S. House of Representatives, which is expectd to occur in September. The U.S. Senate approved the measure a little more than a week after it was introduced in August. President Bush has said publicly that he supports the Compact and plans to sign the measure into law. Similar agreements were adopted by the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario. See "Related Links."
