Project Learning Tree Workshop Information

Project Learning Tree provides educator workshops in which participants receive PLT activity guides for use with students of various ages.  The PLT materials are correlated to Academic Science Content Standards, National Science Standards, and National Social Studies Standards, as well as to Girl Scout badges and programs. Project Learning Tree materials are available only by attending a workshop. Workshops are held at various sites throughout the state and can be arranged at your site. Workshops can combine the PreK-8 guide and one or more secondary modules depending on the needs of the participants. Volunteer facilitators host all PLT workshops.

PreK - 8 Activity Guide
The PLT Environmental Education Activity Guide has nearly 100 interdisciplinary activity lessons for students ranging from PreK through 8th grade.
However, the lessons in the guide are easily adaptable for use by high school educators as well.  The lessons are presented in an unbiased manner and are on a wide variety of environmental topics. The guide is available in a 6-hr. minimum educator workshop hosted by a PLT facilitator. The workshop cost is around *$22.00 per participant, and sometimes college credit is available for a variable increase in cost.

Secondary Modules
The PLT Secondary Thematic Modules follow a specific environmental theme; the topics include: Focus on Forest, Forest Ecology, Municipal Solid Waste, Focus on Risk, Places We Live, and Forests of the World. These topics are geared for 9th-12th grade students but are easily adapted for use with middle school students as well. The modules are available by attending a 3 hr. minimum workshop. The module workshop cost is around *$15.00 per participant.

Facilitator/Leadership
Project Learning Tree could not exist without its network of volunteer facilitators. They are the backbone of PLT. A PLT Facilitator is usually an educator, a resource professional or individual interested in environmental education. Facilitators volunteer to hold PreK-8 and/or Secondary Module workshops as a representative of PLT-Ohio.
To become a facilitator one must attend a Leadership workshop. At PLT Leadership workshops, participants receive PLT materials and learn how to present local workshops for both the PreK-8 guide and the Secondary Modules. They also have access to additional/future modules at a minimal cost. Recently facilitator workshops have been available online for college or graduate credit. Leadership workshops are held only as needed and it is recommended that those interested have already attended a PLT workshop before becoming a facilitator.

Advanced Workshops
The Advanced Workshops are held periodically only for those people who have previously attended a PLT workshop. These workshops update participants on PLT in Ohio and provide in-depth learning experiences and resources on special interest environmental topics. In the past, topics have included: Ohio Forest Products, Solid Waste, Forest Ecology, History of Ohio Forests, and PLT on the Farm. Cost will vary.

Anyone interested in participating in a workshop can view upcoming workshops at www.plt.org. If a group, such as a school or youth organization would like to schedule a workshop for staff development please contact the PLT-Ohio office (plt@dnr.state.oh.us) to arrange facilitators.
