ODNR Division of Wildlife - Wild Resources - Past Migration Tracking Projects

Past Migration Tracking Projects

Osprey Migration

The Division has conducted several research projects tracking birds carrying satellite transmitters.  The first involved marking a male and female osprey at Alum Creek Reservoir in 2005.  Both birds wintered along the Amazon River in 2005-06 with the male wintering in Brazil and the female staying in Columbia. Unfortunately, the female died in Venezuela as she made her way north.  The Division continued to monitor the male until October 2007 when he died.

Black Duck Migration

Black duck migration was also monitored as the Division attached satellite transmitters to 5 black ducks captured at Castalia, Ohio in 2007 and 2008.  One of the 3 ducks trapped in 2007 had a radio failure or was killed in July while the other two birds had radio failure in October.  One of the 2 black ducks trapped in 2008 experienced radio failure in April before he migrated while the second duck migrated to Lake St. Clair in April and to Long Point, Ontario in July before his radio failed.
