In the past few years, outdoor educators and other observers have noted a national decline in interest in outdoor activities that provide direct contact with nature. There are many ways to experience nature—walking in the woods, bird watching, fishing, hunting, natural trail biking, and many other activities. The more people engage in outdoor activities and interact with nature, the more likely they are to appreciate nature and seek to conserve natural resources. Because of the Increasing lack of interest in outdoor activities, some people worry about the ability of future generations to appreciate nature and conservation practices. In response, outdoor recreational groups have been challenged to promote outdoor activities in ways that encourage more young people to have direct experiences with nature.
