A New Look for Ohio Boat Registrations

If you haven't renewed your boat registration through the mail or online for a few years, you'll notice a new look: A plastic, wallet-sized card.

Those boaters who renew their traditional boat registrations via the Internet, through the mail, or at one of our Watercraft Field Offices receive their registration and decals attached to one sheet of paper. The decals appear in the middle of the sheet (see Figure A) and a wallet-size card is attached to the bottom of the letter. The decals get displayed on your boat and the card serves as your watercraft registration certificate -- it is the registration that is required by law to be carried onboard while your boat is underway.

For alternative boat registrations (which can be renewed online, through the mail or in person at any Watercraft field office), the registration card is attached to the bottom of the letter, but the decal is loose in the envelope.

All expired decals must be removed from your boat before the new decals are placed. If you have questions about where to place the decals for your boat, consult the Ohio Vessel Requirements section of the Ohio Boat Operators Guide. If you have an Alternative Registration, the information is also included in the online fact sheet for Alternative Registrations.
