COLUMBUS, OH -- Local communities across Ohio have until November 1 to apply for $43,000 in grants to obtain and place navigational aids on inland waterways, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
These navigational aid grants are awarded on a non-matching basis and are administered by the ODNR Division of Watercraft to improve boating safety for the state's estimated 3 million recreational boaters. Waterway areas that can be marked include controlled areas for boating traffic, restricted areas and hazardous areas.
The buoys and signs must comply with the standard inland waterway regulatory marking system.
The grant money comes from the Waterways Safety Fund, which consists of watercraft registration and titling fees, a percentage of the state gasoline sales tax, as well as funding from the U.S. Coast Guard.
