OHIO COMMUNITIES RECEIVE $480,000 IN BICENTENNIAL
TREE PLANTING GRANTS
COLUMBUS, OH -- Forty-nine Ohio communities have been awarded a total of $480,000 in Bicentennial Legacy Tree Planting Grants to plant trees along public rights-of-way, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
"A hundred years from now many of these trees will still be growing, providing shade, wildlife habitat and beauty for our state," said John Dorka, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. "Ohio is a better place for all our residents thanks to the hard work of volunteers and communities across the state who have participated in these tree planting efforts."
Administered by the ODNR Division of Forestry, the program reimburses communities for tree planting projects. When combined with previous grants, more than $1,550,000 has been awarded for tree planting projects in a total of 128 communities since the program was initiated four years ago in celebration of the state's Bicentennial.
Grants are funded by a percentage of air pollution fines collected by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and are awarded on a competitive basis, with communities providing a 50 percent match in local funds.
Through the Bicentennial Legacy Tree Planting Program, trees were also planted along roadways, on abandoned surface-mine lands and on state wildlife areas.
