ODNR ANNOUNCES $250,000 AVAILABLE FOR
COASTAL MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE GRANTS

SANDUSKY, OH -- Applications for $250,000 in available grants to preserve, protect and enhance Ohio’s Lake Erie coastal resources are currently being accepted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Grant applications will be accepted through December 7.

Proposals that emphasize local planning to assist coastal communities in addressing growth, land use planning and recreational tourism issues will receive higher priority in funding. Examples of such projects include those that improve public access to Lake Erie, mitigate hazards, protect and restore natural resources and sustain coastal development issues.

Either existing planning efforts or new planning proposals will be considered for funding. Preference will be given to applications from communities that have conducted successful community planning.

Coastal Management Assistance Grants are available to local communities, local government agencies, nonprofit organizations, planning commissions and educational institutions. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis, with applicants providing 50 percent of the project costs. The year 2002 grants will be awarded next spring for 15-month projects scheduled to begin July 1.

Applications and guidelines for the Coastal Management Assistance Grants program are available by writing to the ODNR Ohio Coastal Services Center, 1630 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870; or by visiting the Ohio Coastal Management Program’s web site at www.dnr.state.oh.us or by calling 419-626-7986.
