ODNR BEGINS ANNUAL SALE OF CONSERVATION SEEDLINGS
State tree nursery selling more than 40 varieties of tree and shrub seedlings
COLUMBUS, OH - Orders for Ohio Conservation Seedlings are now being taken by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry. The seedlings, available in groups of 25, are one to two years old and bare rooted. A minimum order of 100 seedlings is required.
“We encourage Ohio landowners to plan ahead for any tree-planting activities they have for next spring,” said John Dorka, chief of the Division of Forestry. “Our Ohio Conservation Seedlings are grown specifically for reforestation efforts in the state, and for planting in natural resource protection and habitat improvement projects.”
The Division of Forestry, the state’s largest producer of tree seedlings, sells more than 2,000,000 trees each year. The seedlings are sold for use in reforestation, wildlife habitat development, erosion control, windbreaks and other conservation projects. Seedlings are grown in fertile soils at the Marietta State Tree Nursery and available for distribution in the spring.

More than 40 varieties of trees are available for purchase this season, including white pine, sweetgum, white oak, red oak, black walnut and bald cypress. Early ordering is recommended since some species, such as burr oak, hazelnut and sycamore, and others are in short supply and sell out quickly.
Thanks in part to the sales of Conservation Seedlings, Ohio is now more than 30 percent forested, compared to just 12 percent in the early 1900s. In the past 80 years, the Division of Forestry has planted more than 500 million trees for reforestation efforts in the state.
Selecting the proper type of tree for a particular location and soil characteristic is essential for a successful planting. The Division of Forestry’s service foresters are available to help landowners in choosing the right trees. Assistance is recommended for plantings on more than 3 acres.
