COLUMBUS, OH - With the acquisition of nearly nine acres of land at the head of Old Mans Cave Gorge, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is moving to protect the gateway to Hocking Hills State Park, one of southeast Ohios most scenic areas and the regions premier tourist attraction.
This purchase protects an ecologically sensitive area at the entrance to one of our most cherished and heavily visited state parks, said ODNR Director Sam Speck. By preserving this natural setting, we ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the spectacular beauty and serenity of Ohios Hocking Hills.
ODNR said it would purchase the land, formerly the site of a go-kart track, for $580,000. The acquisition is funded by ODNRs NatureWorks program, a bond issue approved by Ohio voters in 1994 for parks and natural resources conservation. The site is strategically located at the main entrance to Hocking Hills State Park, off State Route 664, and lies adjacent to the parks 159-site campground. A portion of the property may be used to make future enhancements to the campground and improve the safety of roadways at the state park entrance.
ODNR also announced plans to purchase a 119.5-acre addition to Hocking State Forest, at a site just north of Hocking Hills State Park. This property, to be purchased for $292,000, is surrounded on three sides by state-owned land and will provide critical public access to an area of state forest that is designated for rappelling and rock climbing. ODNR officials said the purchase would enhance recreation in the Hocking Hills and further protect the regions forest resources.
Both acquisitions have been approved by the state Controlling Board.
