SYMPOSIUM ON WILDFIRES IN OHIO SET FOR MAY 14 IN COLUMBUS

COLUMBUS, OH - A wildfire symposium to discuss the steps landowners can take to reduce the threat of wildfires will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 14 at the Fawcett Center in Columbus.

The natural landscape in North America, including Ohio, has been greatly affected by wildland fire. Throughout history, fire has been seen as both a negative, destructive force, and more recently, a tool to maintain and restore healthy and diverse landscapes. At the wildland fire symposium, natural resource experts will provide a greater understanding of the historical role fire has played in Ohio’s wildlands.  Additional topics include how Ohio’s traditional mixed oak forests are being replaced by red maple trees. The symposium is expected to attract a varied audience, including land managers, conservationists, public officials and the public.
