GALENA RESIDENT RECEIVES NATIONAL BOATING AWARD

COLUMBUS, OH - Galena resident Emily King, a boating safety and education program administrator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), was recently recognized for her work towards developing national water search and rescue standards.

King was honored with an award of appreciation by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

“Emily is a nationally recognized expert in swift water rescue,” said Jeff Hoedt, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. “This award attests to her strong efforts on behalf of all boaters to improve search and rescue training programs.”

King serves as recording secretary for ASTM’s Search and Rescue Committee and serves as chairperson of the Personal Training and Education Subcommittee. The ASTM Search and Rescue Committee was formed in 1988 and includes 89 participating members who serve on four technical committees that are responsible for 27 approved standards.

A resident of Galena in Delaware County, King joined the ODNR as a state watercraft officer in 1978. She is an instructor in river rescue and ice rescue training programs and served as a boating safety officer during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

King has also been honored by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators with its National Boating Safety Award in 1998. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in public education from The Ohio State University and is a graduate of Delaware Hayes High School.
