VOLUNTEER PROGRAM AT MAUMEE BAY STATE PARK RECEIVES TOP STATEWIDE HONOR

COLUMBUS, OH -- The Volunteers-In-Parks program at Maumee Bay State Park in Lucas County has been named Ohio's Volunteer Park of the Year. The award is presented annually by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to recognize outstanding volunteer programs at its 73 Ohio State Parks. Maumee Bay had previously received honorable mention for the award twice in recent years.

"The volunteer staff at Maumee Bay State Park is the finest in state, helping us improve our services and programs for park visitors," said ODNR Director Sam Speck. "The countless hours of service by these volunteers - and others across the state - are a key reason why Ohio State Parks were named the nation's best by the National Recreation and Park Association."

Maumee Bay's volunteer corps of more than 100 individuals contributed more than 19,000 hours of service to the park in 1998. Last year, park volunteers raised more than $20,000 to construct a new shelterhouse at the campground area. In addition, volunteers assisted with special events including the popular Halloween campout, served as campground hosts, maintained the boardwalk trail, and assisted with daily chores and special projects at the Nature Center.

"The statewide volunteer program has built a strong bridge between our state parks and their local communities," Speck said. "Maumee Bay has formed a positive partnership with volunteers that is paying off in excellent service and outstanding facilities for our visitors."

Volunteers-In-Parks programs from : Lake Milton, Mt. Gilead, Lake Loramie, Quail Hollow and Sycamore State Parks received honorable mention this year.

Statewide, more than 4,300 volunteers worked in various state parks in 1998, contributing a total of more than 220,000 hours of service. The Volunteer-In-Parks program offers opportunities for people of all ages, including individuals, families and organizations.
