COLUMBUS, OH - Hundreds of local volunteers are gearing up for a series of special cleanup projects along Ohio waterways, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
Early spring Waterways Sweep events are being held April 6 on the Little Miami River in Clermont County and at Stonelick State Park; on April 13 along Little Darby Creek in central Ohio; on April 20 at Caesar Creek State Park and West Branch Lake State Park, and on May 11 during the 7th annual OShaugnessy Reservoir cleanup in Franklin County.
These cleanups provide a great source of pride for community-based civic groups and help provide cleaner waterways for all Ohioans to enjoy, said Myron DeBrosse, Waterways Sweep program coordinator for the ODNR Division of Watercraft.
The largest of the annual Waterways Sweep programs is one organized by the Cincinnati-based Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission on June 15 that will cover a 14-county area along the Ohio River.
Last year, volunteers participating in 54 statewide Waterways Sweep events spent a total of 15,320 hours, removing more than 75 tons of trash and other debris along 300 miles of waterways and shoreline. The Waterways Sweep program is funded by a grant from the ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention and administered by the ODNR Division of Watercraft.
