Help Available For Bluebird Box "Landlords"

COLUMBUS, OH -- Veteran bluebird trail managers will share their expertise during the Ohio Bluebird Society's short course, "The Basics of Bluebirding," according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

"The Ohio Bluebird Society has coordinators in 60 counties around Ohio promoting bluebird conservation and education," said Kendra Wecker, wildlife diversity coordinator for the ODNR Division of Wildlife.

The program will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Big Walnut High School in Sunbury (Delaware County). This one-day course is open to the public and is designed to help those with little or no experience in working with bluebirds.

Topics include: the basics of choosing a box; selecting sites to place boxes; identifying birds nesting in boxes; keeping records of box usage; and trouble-shooting complications such as predators, nestling parasites and vandalism.

The $5 registration fee includes morning refreshments, a box lunch, and all instructional materials.

"Interest in these beautiful birds has skyrocketed in recent years. This course is a great opportunity to learn more about the birds and how you can help their population to grow," said Wecker.
