COLUMBUS, OH - Visitors to Mohican State Park are encouraged to “Get Fit Naturally” on Saturday, June 11 by participating in walking, running or biking activities. A number of events are being conducted in conjunction with the Ohio Mountain Bike Association’s championship series race at the park.
“Get Fit” activities begin at 10 a.m. at the Mohican Resort Lodge and are hosted by the Mohican/Malabar Bike Club. Club members will lead biking visitors on the new 8.5-mile mountain bike trail through Mohican State Park and State Forest. A run and a walk on the same trail are planned for participants who do not bike.
The Mohican Mountan Bike 100 will begin at 7 a.m. at the lodge and will feature the nation’s top professional racer, Cameron Chambers, who won the National Off-Road Bicycle Association’s 24-Hour Competition last week in Seattle. A dinner for all participants is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the lodge.
The “Get Fit Naturally” program allows visitors to participate in a variety of fitness activities while enjoying some of Ohio’s most beautiful natural scenery. In addition to promoting physical fitness in a fun atmosphere, “Get Fit Naturally” is a program that entire families can participate in together.
“Ohio State Parks are the perfect recreational venues for families. And with the ‘Get Fit Naturally’ program we can encourage adults, teens and youngsters to have fun together and improve their physical fitness,” said Dan West, chief of Ohio State Parks.
The new mountain bike trail that passes through Mohican State Park and State Forest opened last spring. The trail, which is open both to mountain bike riders and hikers, currently travels from the state park campground, off State Route 3, to County Road 939, near the state forest headquarters. It is the result of five years of planning for a recreational facility that will be harmonious with the ecosystem of the forest and park.
