CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN OHIO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
TO COMPETE IN STATE CONSERVATION EVENT

COLUMBUS, OH -- Four teams of student from central and southern Ohio high schools are set to compete in the 2001 Ohio Envirothon, scheduled for June 10-12 at Bowling Green State University in Wood County.

A total of 20 teams from across the state will compete in the 2001 outdoor academic competition in which students are tested on their knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. The contest is sponsored by the Ohio Federation of Soil & Water Conservation Districts, in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Earlier this spring, more than 360 teams with more than 1,800 students competed in regional Envirothons around Ohio to qualify for the state competition.

Each year, the Envirothon focuses on a specific environmental issue. This year's topic centered on household/homesite nonpoint source pollution.

On the first day of competition, teams of five students work cooperatively to answer questions at a series of five test stations. Envirothon questions were prepared by professionals from ODNR's Division of Soil & Water Conservation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies and institutions. On the second day, the teams make presentations on the focus topic before a panel of judges.

Two teams from Logan High School in Hocking County, a team from Big Walnut High School in Delaware County and a team from Waverly High School in Pike County earned the opportunity to compete at the state level by placing among the top four in their regional Envirothon, which was held in May.

The statewide winner will represent Ohio in the national Envirothon, set for July 24-29 at Raymond, Mississippi. Fifty teams from the United States and Canada are expected to participate in the national Envirothon.
