HURON, OH -- State and local officials will unveil a new $758,000 boating facility on the Huron River during ceremonies scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday July 27. The facility is located on the Huron River adjacent to the downtown marina.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the new facility includes a new building with restrooms and showers, a retail and lounge area, indoor boat storage and several administrative offices. The interior and exterior portions of the facility are accessible by persons with physical disabilities.
"Demand among Ohio boaters is high for transient docking facilities and improved waterway access," said Jeff Hoedt, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. "The Huron Boat Basin Facility represents an exceptional effort at the local level and is something boating interests would like to see continue in other Lake Erie shoreline communities.
An ODNR grant awarded by the Division of Watercraft provided 75 percent of the funding for the $758,000 facility. Since 1995, ODNR grants also have provided funding for completion of the outdoor marina amphitheater, a marina walkway, land acquisition, dredging and dock enhancements.
Ohio ranks eighth nationally with more than 418,000 registered watercraft. Erie County also ranks 17th among Ohio's 88 counties with 5,981 watercraft registered last year.
