COLUMBUS, OH - A team of students from Worthington’s Perry Middle School in Franklin County recently was recognized for its creative effort to incorporate recycling and the use of recycled materials into a city of the future, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

The “Best Use of Recycled Materials Award” was a special award presented by ODNR to Matthew Givens, Christopher Timpone and Kristen Wright at the Ohio Region of the National Engineers Week Future Cities Competition earlier this month.

The annual competition, held at the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, challenges seventh and eighth grade students from across the state to design a future city and then build a 3-D scale model of their city. Event sponsors include Ford Motor Company, Battelle Memorial Institute and the Allstate Foundation.

“It is encouraging to see that these young students successfully incorporated responsible waste management practices into their city plans,” said Ron Kolbash, chief of the ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention. “I congratulate the students and their teachers and advisors for recognizing the economic and environmental benefits of recycling.”

Also receiving an honorable mention for “Best Use of Recycled Materials” was the team of Maria Crippen, Sarah Rowe and Caitlin Belcher from Mount Vernon’s St. Vincent de Paul School in Knox County.
