CONTRIBUTIONS TO NATURAL RESOURCES TAX CHECK-OFF
PROGRAMS HELP PROTECT NATURAL AREAS AND WILDLIFE

COLUMBUS, OH -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) urges taxpayers to remember wildlife, nature preserves and scenic rivers when filing their state income tax returns this year. Donations to Ohio's Natural Areas and Endangered Wildlife income tax check-off programs have helped the state protect natural areas and scenic rivers, reintroduce endangered wildlife species and preserve wetland habitat.

"Ohio citizens can make a very significant contribution to our natural resources and environment by simply checking the two boxes on their state income tax return forms," said ODNR Director Sam Speck. "Donations to these programs help to restore endangered species, such as the bald eagle, and enhance our ability to protect Ohio’s most natural areas," he said.

Last year, more than 177,000 Ohioans contributed a total of $1,261,983 to the state's two natural resources tax check-off funds; $665,896 for natural areas and preserves and $596,087 for wildlife habitat and endangered species protection.

Since their creation in 1984, the wildlife and natural areas tax check-off programs have generated more than $19 million. Donations to the Division of Wildlife have helped protect and restore endangered species such as the bald eagle, trumpeter swan, peregrine falcon, osprey and Karner blue butterfly, as well as purchase critical habitat and fund programs for wildlife research and education. The Division of Natural Areas & Preserves uses tax check-off funds solely for land acquisition, facility development and special projects undertaken at Ohio's 122 state nature preserves and 20 state scenic rivers.

Ohioans can donate a portion of their state income tax refund by checking the appropriate boxes on the state tax return form for the amount they wish to donate to either or both programs. Those who are not eligible to receive a refund can send a check to either the Division of Natural Areas & Preserves or the Division of Wildlife, Wildlife Diversity Account, ODNR Fountain Square Complex, Columbus, Ohio 43224.
