COLUMBUS, OH - Recreational boaters are reminded to keep an eye out for safety as summer’s last big holiday - the Labor Day weekend - gets underway.

“Boaters are always encouraged to enjoy their activities safely anytime when on the water and this is especially important during one of the busiest boating weekends of the year,” said Michael Quinn, acting chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft.

Ohio has recorded seven fatal boating-related accidents this year, resulting in eight deaths.

The most important safe boating practices include: avoiding alcohol consumption while boating and always wearing a life jacket. Obeying the rules of the road, keeping a proper lookout and being responsible for the well being of all boat passengers are also important.

The Division of Watercraft says boating safety has significantly improved over the past decade because of increased safety awareness by boaters, increased law enforcement presence on Ohio waterways and more boaters who are completing an approved boater safety education class.

Recreational boating activity each year drops significantly after the Labor Day holiday weekend. However, the Division of Watercraft notes that September remains an excellent time to continue boating and fishing because of mild weather and reduced traffic on Ohio waterways. Fall fishing opportunities increase as air and water temperatures begin to gradually decline.
