Landowners with property along streams, wetlands and moist bottomlands are encouraged to protect these riparian areas by planting trees that will create buffer zones, prevent soil erosion and attract wildlife.

Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department and Elm Grove Volunteer Fire Department in Pike County recently received Firewise Hazard Mitigation Grants through the ODNR Division of Forestry. Jackson Township VFD received a $5,190 grant and Elm Grove VFD received $3,100.

Governor Ted Strickland recently directed ODNR to begin the process of attaining third-party certification for Ohio's state forests, assuring the continued health of these woodlands while recognizing them as management models for the state's nearly 400,000 woodland owners.

We encourage woodland owners and other visitors to take advantage of a variety of educational activities including demonstrations of forestry techniques; equipment and tool displays; information on financial assistance and where to buy tree seedlings; discussions with professional service foresters; and networking with fellow woodland owners.
