COLUMBUS, OH – Ashtabula and Lake counties are Ohio’s own “Napa Valley,” producing some of the state’s finest grapes and home to more than 20 local wineries.
As fall’s grape harvest season gets into full swing, so do the region’s festivals and observances, including the annual Geneva Grape JAMboree on September 29-30 and the Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival on October 13-14. These two premier events, along with the Kids’ Pumpkin Train on October 13,14,20 and 21 in Jefferson and the ongoing events at Lake Farm Park in Kirtland, make northeast Ohio a great place to visit in autumn.
At the center of activity is the Lodge at Geneva State Park. Perched on a bluff above Lake Erie in the historic village of Geneva-On-The-Lake, the lodge offers spectacular vistas and outstanding amenities. Visitors can relax beside the glass-enclosed indoor pool and hot tub and dine in the Horizons dining room. A wine-tasting room displays handiwork of local vintners and hosts special programs on the history and science of wine making. A game room with electronic games, pool and air hockey are available for the young and young at heart. Bikes may be rented through the lodge; a golf course is adjacent to the park.
Within a short drive of the lodge in both Lake and Ashtabula counties lie outstanding wineries where visitors can sip, dine and enjoy a variety of entertainment. Northeast Ohio’s soil and unique climate are ideal for grape growing. German immigrants first brought the tradition (and the vines!) to the Lake Erie region in the 1800s. Today, Ohio is one of the top 10 wine-producing states, with more than a half million gallons of Riesling, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, pinot grigio, seyval blanc and more fermented annually.
