2008 Scrap Tire Grant Recipients by Region

CENTRAL OHIO
The City of Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks in Franklin County was awarded $75,000 to apply a crumb rubber playing surface in Spindler Road Park and to other parks in the future. The conventional grass playing fields will be converted to rubberized natural grass fields by applying 120,000 pounds of recycled crumb rubber to each surface.

The North Central Ohio Solid Waste Management District was awarded $74,723 to pave roadways at the 2,100-acre Molly Caren Agricultural Center near London - site of the annual Farm Science Review. Portions of Land and Soybean avenues and Beef Street are slated for paving with recycled scrap tires.

NORTHWESTERN OHIO
The Wood County Solid Waste District (Enviro-Tire Recycling) received a $75,000 grant to establish a scrap tire shredding operation in northwest Ohio. The shredded tires will be marketed for civil engineering projects and for tire-derived fuel. The company is requesting assistance to install the equipment to improve efficiency of operations and allow the facility to grind more tires.

SOUTHEASTERN OHIO
The Muskingum County Engineer was awarded $150,000 to pave one county road and two state routes, using scrap tires. The entire length of the project is approximately 8.5 miles and will involve placing a 1.5-inch surface course on County Road 500, Route 60 and Route 146.

WESTERN OHIO
The Logan County Engineer received $150,000 to pave four roads in the county, using scrap tire material. Total length of the project is 18.7 miles and involves placing a 1.5-inch course on County Road 10, County Road 106, County Road 142 and County Road 144.

COLUMBUS, OH - Resurfaced streets in the Village of Carrollton in Carroll County, new playing fields for some Columbus parks, a tire shredding facility in Wood County and paved roads for the Molly Caren Agricultural Center in Madison County are among seven projects awarded a total of $774,723 in grants aimed at putting old tires to good use.

These Scrap Tire Grants range from $74,700 to $150,000 and were awarded to public agencies across Ohio to support tire recycling efforts. Grant amounts depend on the amount of recycled tires being utilized.

Most projects funded will use the money for civil engineering purposes. However, the grant to Wood County will establish a scrap tire shredding facility to support civil engineering projects and the creation of tire-derived fuel.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention oversees the Scrap Tire Grant Program, which is funded through a fee on the wholesale purchase of tires. Ohio has a significant backlog of scrap tires, leading to health and environmental concerns statewide. The Scrap Tire Grant Program has successfully lessened that backlog in recent years, while putting those used and abandoned tires to good use in a variety of innovative ways.

Businesses, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, municipalities and solid waste management districts are eligible for the grants. A match of at least 100 percent is required.

Previous scrap tire grants have funded various projects including several ground tire re-paving efforts, creation of tire-derived fuel to power industrial boilers and power plants, and the purchase of scrap tire processing equipment.
