ATHENS, OH - This spring, approximately 50 outdoor enthusiasts with special disabilities will have the opportunity to hunt wild turkey, participate in field activities, and create lasting memories and friendships during Ohio's "Wheelin' Sportsmen" turkey hunting event.
The event is scheduled for May 2 - 4, with activities taking place at the Noble County Fairgrounds and surrounding area. Members of the Shenandoah Valley Ghost Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) will host the event. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife will serve as a co-sponsor.
Registration deadline is April 1 and space is limited. Due to the programs popularity, men and women interested in participating are encouraged to pre-register. Hunters will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
For registration and program information contact Chris Estadt, district director for the NWTF, 740-732-0320. Members of the Shenandoah Valley Ghost Gobblers Chapter are also accepting registrations and can be reached at: 740-732-7105, 740-732-7000 or 740-732-0001.
Although hunters must meet all the necessary Ohio licensing requirements, they need not be experienced in turkey hunting. Known as an "Ultimate Team-Up," this NWTF-developed program is open to applicants with any type of physically challenging disability. Each disabled hunter will be paired with an experienced guide who will offer whatever assistance may be needed in the field. The program is dedicated to providing all people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.
In addition to hunting participants, the Shenandoah Ghost Gobblers Chapter is seeking volunteers and donations for the event. Anyone interested in assisting with the program should contact Chris Estadt at 740-732-7105.
