LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL TEAM PLACES FIFTH IN
INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION COMPETITION
Forty-nine teams from U.S. and Canada participated in 2002 Canon Envirothon

COLUMBUS, OH -- A team of five students from Logan High School in Hocking County placed fifth in the international Canon Envirothon, held July 29 through August 4 at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. The Canon Envirothon is North America's largest academic conservation competition, testing students' knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues.

The Logan High School team consisted of Holly White (captain), Luke Hacker, Hickory Ogle, Steve Carlson and Dameon Baughman. Advisors Fred Walter and Holly Borer accompanied the team to Massachusetts. Walter is a teacher at Logan High School and Borer is an education specialist for the Hocking County Soil & Water Conservation District. Each student won a Canon camera and a medallion for their effort. Their Hocking County soil and water conservation district also received a camera.

The team earned the right to compete at the international level by placing first at the 2002 Ohio Envirothon held in June at Hocking College. Ohio has one of the largest Envirothons in North America. More than 1,600 students competed at the local, area and state level for the opportunity to represent Ohio in the Canon Envirothon. The statewide event is co-sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the Ohio Federation of Soil & Water Conservation Districts.

“The five students from Logan High School worked very hard to prepare for both the Ohio Envirothon and the event last week. We’re very proud of their success at the Canon Envirothon,” said David Hanselmann, chief of ODNR’s Division of Soil & Water Conservation.

Forty-nine teams of secondary students from the United States and Canada competed in last week's international event, which included written tests and oral presentations. Each team was tested under the supervision of foresters, soil scientists and wildlife specialists. Teamwork, problem solving and oral presentation skills were evaluated as each team offered recommendations for solving an environmental challenge.

This is the sixth year that Canon U.S.A. has sponsored the international event. It is an aspect of the company's Clean Earth Campaign, which develops energy-efficient office products, re-manufactures equipment and materials and protects endangered species.
