ODNR AWARDS MORE THAN $250,000 IN GRANTS TO ENHANCE
OHIO’S LAKE ERIE COAST

COLUMBUS, OH - Eight grants totaling $252,516 have been awarded to organizations and communities along Ohio’s north coast to improve and protect Lake Erie, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

These Coastal Management Assistance Grants help communities and organizations develop comprehensive resource-protection plans, improve access to Lake Erie's shore, conduct research and education and develop outdoor recreational facilities.

This year’s grant recipients include the Lorain Port Authority ($25,000), Sandusky Area Maritime Association ($5,000), Cuyahoga Community Planning Organization ($35,950), City of Lorain ($50,000), Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments ($47,566), Great Lakes Historical Society ($31,875), Cuyahoga County Board of Health ($38,300), and Saybrook Township in Ashtabula County ($18,825).

Each project selected addresses at least one of the following ODNR Coastal Management funding categories:

  • public access
  • coastal habitat
  • water quality
  • coastal hazards
  • coastal dependent uses and community development
  • government coordination and decision making

The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration funds the Coastal Management Assistance Grant program. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis, with each recipient matching its grant with at least 50 percent of the project's total cost.

ODNR has awarded more than $2.4 million in Coastal Management Assistance Grants since the program began in 1997. Applications and guidelines for the next round of grants to be awarded in 2007 will be available in the fall by contacting the ODNR Office of Coastal Management at 419-626-7980 or online at ohiodnr.com/coastal.
