THREE EASTERN OHIO COMMUNITIES RECEIVE MORE THAN $50,000 FOR LOCAL PARK AND RECREATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS
State Rep. Jennifer Garrison, ODNR Director Sean D. Logan present checks
CAMBRIDGE, OH - Three eastern Ohio communities received a total of $50,194 in grants today for local park improvement and construction projects funded through the state NatureWorks program.
Sean D. Logan, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), and State Rep. Jennifer Garrison presented checks to the City of Cambridge and the Village of Cumberland in Guernsey County, as well as the Village of Clarington in Monroe County.
The City of Cambridge received $25,751 to help develop a skate park in City Park. The money augments another $25,000 in capital funds allocated for the project by the Ohio General Assembly in recent years. The Village of Cumberland received $17,783 toward developing a playground in Cumberland Park.
The Village of Clarington received $6,660 to help acquire 1.3 acres along the Ohio River and Sunfish Creek for Sunfish Creek Park. The village has attempted to acquire the acreage, located at the intersection of state routes 78 and 7, for at least 10 years. Located on a Scenic Byway, the new park will help create a place of public recreation and enjoyment.
In May, ODNR announced that 107 Ohio communities in 70 counties would receive a total of $2,289,387 in state NatureWorks grants for local park and recreational improvements. These grants represented the 13th round of more than $56 million in grants funded by the Ohio Parks and Natural Resources Fund bond issue, approved by voters in 1993. Each grant requires a 25 percent local match.
Grants are awarded on a population-based formula used to determine the share of grant funds available to each county. Applications are then ranked competitively by ODNR on a broad range of criteria.
The NatureWorks bond issue program funds major renovations and improvements for Ohio's state and local parks, state forests, nature preserves, wildlife areas and other natural resources facilities.
