LAKE ERIE GEOLOGY OFFICE TO CLOSE
Coastal mapping and other projects of the office will continue
COLUMBUS, OH - The office of the Lake Erie Geology Group, located at 1634 Sycamore Line Road in Sandusky, will close on January 4 as part of ongoing reorganization and cost-saving moves by the Ohio Geological Survey, a division of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
The work of the office, which includes researching and mapping mineral resources under Lake Erie; mapping and monitoring the movement of sediment within the lake’s basin; and investigating and mapping the lake’s coastal erosion area, will continue.
The Division of Geological Survey will still maintain a presence on the lake by operating its seasonal lake-based fieldwork from the ODNR Office of Coastal Management and Division of Watercraft facilities in Sandusky. The Lake Erie Geology Office staffed three full-time employees and one part-time employee. Two of the full-time Lake Erie geologists will be reassigned - one to the Office of Coastal Management and one to the Geological Survey’s office in Columbus. One management position will be abolished.
The agency expects to save about $60,000 yearly in operational costs as a result of the reorganization. The division will continue to map the Coastal Erosion Area under a legislative mandate. It will also continue to monitor sand movement in near-shore areas.
