Canal history comes alive at Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve

Natural Areas Discovery series event fun for entire family

COLUMBUS, OH—Step back in time as you walk along the remnants of the Ohio-Erie Canal at Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve in Licking County. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is hosting an interpretive Canal 16 hike on Friday, June 18 at 10 a.m. Participants will meet in the main parking lot.

The central feature of the 957-acre preserve is a narrow east-west gorge cut by the Licking River through Black Hand sandstone. Historically, the area provided an important transportation route for Native Americans. By 1929, the gorge had already witnessed the passing of the Ohio-Erie Canal, the steam-powered Central Ohio Railroad and the electric Inter-urban trolley car.

Blackhand Gorge is located 8 miles east of Newark on State Route 16. Exit south on State Route 146 and proceed to preserve’s entrance, which is south on County Road 273.

The event is part of the Natural Areas Discovery Series, sponsored by the ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves. For more information, visit the division’s Web site at www.ohiodnr.com/dnap.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
