ODNR Awards Grants to Increase Local Scrap Tire Recycling Efforts
COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), through its Scrap Tire Grant program, will help Ohio communities and local governments develop tire recycling projects utilizing innovative processes.
Twelve Ohio agencies, including a number of local solid waste districts, county engineer’s offices and park districts, will receive grant funds for civil engineering projects as well as manufacturing and processing projects that utilize recycled tire material, and reduce the amount of discarded scrap tire waste. Grant amounts are dependent upon the number of recycled tires being utilized. The Scrap Tire Grant Program, coordinated by ODNR’s Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, is funded through a fee on tires at the point of purchase.
Ohio has begun to address its backlog of scrap tires, which can lead to health and environmental concerns statewide. ODNR’s program has successfully reduced the backlog in recent years, while benefiting projects, such as crumb rubber paving, which turns scrap tire material into useful products.
One such project, undertaken by the Sandusky County Park District, will use bike trail paving, from a ground tire and asphalt mix, to pave 17 miles of trail along an abandoned rail line on the North Coast Inland Bike Trail. The district will also pave the access road which leads to a scuba diving access area. It is estimated that nearly 1,900 tires will be used in the project.
Businesses, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, municipalities, and solid waste management districts are eligible for the grants. Each grant dollar awarded is matched locally at 100 percent or more.
The ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention is responsible for implementing statewide waste reduction, recycling, recycling market development and litter prevention programs. The division encourages Ohioans to reduce waste, recycle materials and buy recycled-content products. For more information, visit www.ohiodnr.com.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
