Gas Storage Well Clearing Continues in Mohican-Memorial State Forest
PERRYSVILLE, OH – Natural gas storage well clearing work is scheduled to resume July 20 at Mohican-Memorial State Forest, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry. This clearing activity is part of the agreement that was reached between the ODNR and Columbia Gas in 2007, minimizing the impact of maintenance activities within the forest.
To date, 19 well sites have been cleared under this agreement.
For the summer of 2009, 12 well sites are slated for maintenance work this year by Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation. As per the 2007 agreement, specially trained crews will conduct the tree clearing activity while representatives from ODNR and Columbia Gas monitor the work.
Most tree clearing will be done within 60 feet of the gas storage well heads, and trees greater than ten inches in diameter will be removed in a 60 to 120 foot zone.
There are 56 natural gas storage wells operated by Columbia Gas within the 4,525 acre Mohican-Memorial State Forest and the adjacent 1,294 acre Mohican State Park.
The Blue Bridle Trail will be posted closed during weekdays to facilitate access for tree clearing and well rehabilitation work and allow for public safety. Notice will be posted at the Bridle Day Use Area. A portion of the mountain bike trail will also be posted closed during week days for clearing operations.
