"Wear It Ohio!" Life Jacket Awareness Campaign Begins May 23 in Four Locations
COLUMBUS, OH - In an effort to increase life jacket use among Ohio boaters, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft will loan more than 300 new inflatable life jackets as part of its "Wear It Ohio!" awareness campaign beginning May 23.
The "Wear It Ohio!" life jacket awareness campaign, now in its second year, invites boaters to talk with ODNR Division of Watercraft staff and volunteers at selected boat ramps at Portage Lakes, Buck Creek, Caesar Creek Lake and Buckeye Lake state parks. Boaters who answer boating safety questions will have the chance to win promotional prizes. Eligible participants include Ohio boaters age 18 and older with valid identification who sign pledges to wear life jackets and agree to follow program rules. The pledge requires boaters who receive loaner life jackets to return them to the Division of Watercraft by October 31.
Proper and consistent use of life jackets remains the best way to increase safety while on the water. Ohio law requires life jackets be worn while riding a personal watercraft, while waterskiing or being towed by a similar device and for children less than 10 years old on any vessel less than 18 feet in length.
The National Safe Boating Council, which sponsors observance of National Safe Boating Week, May 16-22, reports that approximately 90 percent of all boating-related fatalities result from drowning and that 70 percent of the drowning victims are not wearing a life jacket when the incidents occurred.
