ODNR Helps Expand Cincinnati's Urban Timber Program
Recycling grant helps schools make use of tree waste
CINCINNATI, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention will announce a grant to vastly expand a recycling program that will produce 45,000 board feet of lumber annually as shelving, flooring and closets for Cincinnati Public Schools' new and renovated schools. The grant also will support educating students about the program and the importance of recycling according to the "highest and best" use.
Two years ago, Cincinnati Public Schools teamed up with the Hamilton County Solid Waste District and the Cincinnati Park Board to develop the Urban Timber Program. It provides a solution to urban wood waste, including ash trees being threatened by the Emerald Ash Borer. The result: 4,400 board feet of lumber to date has been milled and recycled as school book cases and closets.
