Headlands Beach State Nature Preserve Hosts Adopt-A-Beach
Program held in conjunction with the Alliance for the Great Lakes
MENTOR, OHIO - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves will be participating in the Adopt-A-Beach™ program at Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve. The division's Adopt-A-Beach™ Kickoff will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. The preserve is located at the far east end of Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor.
Interested volunteers are encouraged to attend the kick-off event which will give them an opportunity to become involved in conservation activities at Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve. Following a short program, division staff and volunteers will be picking up litter from the beach and sand dune areas. Gloves and trash bags will be supplied - participants are asked to dress appropriately for the weather.
Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve protects one of the last and best beach dune communities in Ohio. It is an isolated Great Lakes version of the extensive sand dune shoreline communities found along the Atlantic coast. Many rare plants migrated to the area including sea rocket, beach pea, beach grass and seaside spurge. These coastal plants are not found growing naturally farther inland in the state. Additionally, Headlands Dunes protects one of the best sites in Ohio for birdwatching during migration in the spring and fall.
