GOVERNOR STRICKLAND TO FOLLOW OHIO STATE FAIR TRADITION,
PLANT TREE IN GOVERNORS' GROVE ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 10

COLUMBUS, OH - Governor Ted Strickland will follow a tradition that is more than 40 years old when he plants a tree at the Ohio State Fairgrounds on Friday, August 10, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Strickland is scheduled to plant an American linden in the Governors' Grove of the 8-acre Natural Resources Park at the southeast corner of the fairgrounds at 10 a.m.

Every Ohio governor since James A. Rhodes has commemorated his tenure as the state's chief executive by planting a tree in the grove, a popular picnic and gathering spot on the fairgrounds. The grove is located on the west side of the Natural Resources Park.

The stately American linden (also knows as American basswood), selected for this year's planting, is a favorite shade tree for large areas, such as parks and arboreta. It can grow 60 to 125 feet high and reach a trunk diameter of 2 to 5 feet. During May and June, the tree produces clusters of fragrant, yellowish flowers. The flowers mature into rounded fruit by late summer, providing a good food source for wildlife.
