The Geologic Mapping and Industrial Minerals Group of the Ohio Division of Geological Survey investigates the mineral resources, glacial deposits, and the near-surface bedrock of the state. The Geologic Mapping and Industrial Minerals Group conducts research to create a regional geologic framework on which more detailed geologic investigations can be based. Staff geologists in this group research the location and distribution of economically significant deposits such as limestone, coal, and sand and gravel as well as the general surface geology of Ohio. They develop maps depicting the thickness and character of glacial deposits throughout the state. Members of this Group recently completed reconnaissance bedrock-geology, bedrock-topography, and structure contour maps of the state that are available to the public. The Geologic Mapping and Industrial Minerals Group investigates geohazards such as karst (sinkholes) and landslide-prone areas. They are also responsible for publishing the annual "Report on Ohio Mineral Industries." Research activities of the Geologic Mapping and Industrial Minerals Group are supported by a portion of funds from a severance tax on the Ohio mineral industries and are supplemented with funds from state and federal grants.
