The Ohio Geological Survey's Lake Erie Geology Group researches and documents the geologic framework and processes of Lake Erie and its coast. Our two main programs are: (1) investigation of the geologic framework and processes responsible for coastal erosion, and (2) identification and mapping of mineral resources beneath the lake. Other responsibilities include a substantial effort for ODNR's Coastal Zone Management Program, management of permits and leases for extraction of mineral resources under Lake Erie, and providing service to the public and governmental agencies that require information about Lake Erie geology.

The Lake Erie Geology Group uses three research vessels, the 48-foot GS-1, 14-foot GS-2 and 25-foot GS-3. The larger two vessels are equipped with sidescan-sonar GPS and towable underwater video cameras, which are used for mapping bedrock and sediment distribution on the lake bottom. The smaller two boats enable work in neashore areas and in smaller bodies of water.
