ALB Canopy Replanting Pilot Program

The following is an overview of the Division of Forestry’s approach for the partial restoration of tree canopy resulting from the Asian Longhorned Beetle eradication effort.

Trees Eligible for Restoration
The intent of this program is to restore lost canopy cover, not compensate affected property owners.  Property owners can request a one for one replacement for each eligible yard tree up to ten (10) trees.
Trees removed from areas where regeneration occurs naturally, such as woodlots, thickets, stream banks, fencerows, and non-maintained areas, are not covered under this effort.
Removals from areas that normally will not support tree regeneration, such as frequently maintained residential lawns, municipal streets and parks, and commercial landscapes, are the focus of this program.
ODNR Regional Urban Foresters will verify that the number of requested trees is correct, and that restoration plantings conform to the scope of this project.
Eligible trees will be replaced by quantity, not size; and must be larger than 4” caliper.

Planting Restoration Trees
Restoration trees will be available at a local designated pickup site.
All restoration trees must be planted on the affected property, but may be relocated on the affected property at the landowner’s discretion.
The property owner is responsible for properly planting the replacement tree(s).
Restoration trees must be located so that their future growth will not conflict with existing above or below ground utility wires, or reduce vehicular or pedestrian mobility or visibility.
Restoration trees will not be guaranteed following planting for this project.
Restoration trees will be in the 1 ¼” to 1 ½” caliper size range.
Restoration trees shall be selected from a list supplied at the Tree Replanting Informational Meeting and this website.
ODNR Division of Forestry will provide technical assistance for proper tree selection, installation, and maintenance.
Property owners are responsible for installation and subsequent care.
The maximum number of restoration trees for any one property is ten (10).

Replanting Process
Using the above eligible criteria, affected property owners will tell the Division of Forestry the number and types of trees they want for their property based on the total amount eligible for replanting. Replanting forms will be provided at the Tree Replanting Informational Meeting, or may be downloaded from this website.

The fall ALB Canopy Replanting Pilot Program took place on Saturday, October 20th, between 9:00 AM and noon.  Approximately 300 trees were either picked up or delivered to ALB-affected property owners.  The Division of Forestry wishes to thank the following organizations and groups for making this pilot effort successful: Village of Bethel, Community Christian Church, USDA APHIS, Ohio Department of Agriculture, Davey Resource Group, Grant Career Center, Cincinnati Park Board, The Nature Conservancy, OSU Extension, Green Umbrella, and several local individuals.
