Specialty Forest Products
The mention of forest products traditionally brings to mind lumber and paper. While these are still very significant products coming from woodlands, the number of alternative products that woodland owners collect, grow, and make is growing.
Common specialty forest products include various woodland herbs (e.g., ginseng, goldenseal, black cohosh), maple syrup, mushrooms, nuts, berries, and an array of special wood products (e.g., baskets, barrels, bowls, charcoal, hand-made furniture, frames, games, handles, toys, dishes).
When looking for woodland income opportunities, small woodlot owners often look to specialty forest products since timber harvesting may not be feasible on small woodlots. Marketing of these products has become more viable with the connectivity that the internet provides, and in an ever changing world, new woodland products will likely emerge.
