PORTAGE LAKES WETLAND - 6 ACRES

Main Feature:

Remnant of a larger tamarack swamp.

Portage Lakes Wetland is primarily a tall shrub sphagnum bog community dominated by speckled alder and arrowwood. Some of the rare species found growing here include swamp birch, tamarack, alder-leaved buckthorn and smooth gooseberry. This wet basin is too wet to enter without ankle-high boots and it is difficult to walk through the thick shrubs.

Location:
Located south of Akron. From the junction of I-277 and State Route 93, proceed south on State Route 93 to Portage Lakes Drive (County Road 75). Proceed east approximately 1 mile; park at the Kiwanis Senior Center on the west side of the road. The preserve can be accessed from this parking lot. No visitor facilities are present.
