PERIDERIDIA AMERICANA (Nutt.) Reichenb.

Perideridia

FAMILY: Umbelliferae (Apiaceae)

HABIT: Erect perennial herb to 12 dm.; flowering June, July; fruiting July-September.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Perideridia americana slightly resembles, and may be confused with Thaspium barbinode. P. americana has white flower petals and laterally-flattened, wingless fruits, whereas T. barbinode has yellow flower petals and dorsally-flattened, narrowly-winged fruits. Non-flowering material cannot be identified with certainty.

TOTAL RANGE: OH to sw. MI and IL, s. to TN, AR, and se. KS; local throughout range.

STATE RANGE: PICKAWAY CO.: wet woods 2 mi. se. of Whisler, Salt Creek Twp., 11 June 1950, F. Bartley (BHO, OS). Roberts and Cooperrider (1982, p. 61) state that this species was "reported in 1840 from Madison County prairies". The basis for this reference is not known.

STATE STATUS: 1980-1983: Endangered, 1984 to present: Presumed Extirpated.

HABITAT: Moist to wet, open situations in woodlands and prairies. Often on limestone outcrops.

HAZARDS: Unknown, but perhaps overshading by woody species as a result of succession.

RECOVERY POTENTIAL: Unknown, but probably poor.

INVENTORY GUIDELINES: Mature flowering or fruiting material is needed for positive identification.

COMMENTS: Giannasi and Chuang (1976) show the range of this species to include much of south-central Ohio. It should be sought there in areas of appropriate habitat. Recent searches have failed to relocate the reported population. However, this species is easily overlooked or misidentified. It still may be extant in southern Ohio.
