Summer Employment Opportunities include:
The Division of Parks and Recreation offers summer positions in state parks throughout Ohio. The duration of employment varies with positions, but it can extend from April to October. Contact the park(s) of interest to check job availability.
To apply for summer employment, please complete an application and submit it directly to the State Park(s) of your choice. Eligible applicants to be interviewed will be contacted. Applicants must be able to provide their own housing and transportation.
NATURALIST AIDE
Duties:
- Plans and conducts park programs, slide and specialty talks, and nature hikes
- Maintains nature displays and cares for nature center
- Provides information to local media on park activities
- Performs public relations duties
- Answers visitor questions, phone calls, and correspondence
- Maintains information on park natural history
- Operates vehicles
- May be required to work weekends and holidays with variable hours and shifts
Suggested Qualifications:
- Must possess a background or education in interpretive programming, natural history, animal care and nature studies
- Experience in public speaking and public relations
- Ability and desire to work with children
- Leadership abilities and outdoor skills
- Valid Ohio driver’s license
SEASONAL PARK OFFICER
Duties:
- Patrols park by land/water
- Enforces Ohio Revised Code and ODNR, Division of Parks and Recreation rules and regulations
- Issues citations and makes arrests
- Maintains records and prepares reports
- Responds to visitors questions
- Operates vehicles
- Provides emergency assistance and first aid
- Presents programs to visitors and groups
- Performs routine ground and vehicle maintenance
- Assists with park operations
- May be required to work weekends and holidays, variable hours and shifts
Qualifications:
- Must possess an Ohio Peace Officer’s Basic Training Certificate
- Must be 21 years and have a valid Ohio driver’s license
- Ability to perform first aid and emergency techniques
- Current CPR certificate is desirable
- Experience in public relations and public speaking
- Experience in grounds and vehicle maintenance
- Experience operating patrol equipment
- Must pass a pre-employment fitness test
- Must qualify with firearm
- Must pass a background investigation, drug test, polygraph test, and psychological test.
NATURAL RESOURCES AIDE - Conservation Worker
Duties:
- Performs routine ground and building maintenance
- Assists with construction and maintenance of trails, fences, and structures
- Performs equipment maintenance
- Performs mowing and routine maintenance
- Picks up litter and empties trash containers
- Cleans park latrines and restrooms and applies chemicals and deodorizers
- Paints building interiors and exteriors
- Operates vehicles
- My be required to work weekends and holidays, variable hours and shifts
Suggested Qualifications:
- Must have training and/or experience in operation of mowers, tractors, trucks, trimmers, power and hand tools
- Minor trade skills
- Knowledge of safety practices
- Must have valid Ohio driver’s license
- Commercial driver’s license may be required
NATURAL RESOURCES AIDE - Campground Attendant
Duties:
- Registers campers and assigns camp sites
- Processes daily camping receipts and attendance reports
- Assists campers with problems and dispatches proper equipment and personnel in the event of an emergency
- Advises campers of park regulations
- Provides information regarding park facilities
- Cleans and maintains camp check-in office
- Mows and trims grass in camp area
- Performs general camp area maintenance
- Operates vehicles and other equipment
- May be required to work weekends and holidays, variable hours and shifts
Suggested Qualifications:
- Must have training and/or experience in housekeeping and use of cleaning equipment
- Knowledge of safety practices
- Valid Ohio driver’s license
NATURAL RESOURCES AIDE - Custodial Worker
Duties:
- Performs general cleaning of cabins and other park facilities
- Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes and polishes floor surfaces
- Cleans and shampoos rugs and carpets
- Washes walls
- Cleans, dusts, and waxes furniture
- Cleans glass and mirrors
- Empties and cleans trash containers
- Removes and hangs draperies
- Cleans sidewalks
- Reports need for equipment repair
- Operates vehicles
- May be required to work weekends and holidays, variable hours and shifts
Suggested Qualifications:
- Must have training and/or experience in housekeeping and use of cleaning equipment
- Knowledge of safety practices
- Valid Ohio driver’s license
NATURAL RESOURCES SPECIALIST
Duties:
- Performs routine administrative duties (e.g., report writing, gather statistics, answering public inquiries, and explaining park programs to the public)
- Performs routine clerical tasks (e.g., typing or entering data into a personal computer, and balancing receipts and ledgers)
- Assists with other park operations (e.g., sells merchandise in camp store, counts items for inventory, registers campers)
- May act as lead worker over seasonal employees doing routine labor and/or building maintenance (e.g., assigns tasks and inspects completed work, teaches use of hand and power tools and equipment)
- May be required to work weekends and holidays, variable hours and shifts
Suggested Qualifications:
- Depending on work area, should meet the same qualifications as a Natural Resources Aide
- Training and/or experience operating a typewriter, personal computer, mowers, tractors, hand, and power tools
- Ability to perform minor skilled trades
- Valid Ohio driver’s license
LIFEGUARD
Duties:
- Assists swimmers in distress & administers emergency first aid as necessary
- Patrols beach and watches swimmers during swim periods to ensure safety
- Enforces rules and regulations regarding swim areas
- Maintains beach area and removes safety hazards
- Operates vehicles
Suggested Qualifications:
- Must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, or an American Red Cross Lifeguard 2 Certificate, or a nationally recognized equivalent
- Must have current CPR certificate
- Knowledge of first aid and safety practices
- Experience in public relations
- Physically fit
- May be required to work weekends and holidays, variable hours and shifts
- Valid Ohio Driver's License
