Renewing Your Registration

Most boat registrations can be renewed online, through the mail, or in person at a Watercraft Registration Agent. You need your renewal notice, which contains your assigned PIN, and a VISA or Mastercard to renew online. If you are going to an Agent, call in advance for hours and acceptable method of payment. You will need to bring proof of identification (driver's license or other acceptable ID).

Not All Boats Need Titles

Common Questions

Boat Trailers are registered through the BMV like your vehicle -- annually, expiring on your date of birth.

Need replacement decals? Lost your registration? Replacement decals or a copy of your registration are available through the mail or at one of our Watercraft Offices. They cost $4 each ($4 for a new set of decals or $4 for a copy of the registration). You need to send/bring in this form [17k; PDF] with the fee.

How long does it take to get renewal decals? If you visit an agent and everything is in order, you can walk out with decals. If you renew via the Internet, please allow 10 working days to get your decals. If you renew via the mail, please allow 15 working days. Your decals must be displayed on the boat to be legal.

Visiting from out-of-state? You are welcome to use your out-of-state boat in Ohio as long as it is legally registered for your current state of residence. You need to abide by all Ohio boating laws and should have proof of residency.

Notify us if you change your address OR if you sell your boat. Send the OH number as well as the old and new information to us.

Buying a used boat? If the boat is titled, be sure to have the owner transfer the title to you BEFORE you attempt to transfer the registration to your name. You don't own it until you have a title for it in your name. If the boat doesn't require a title, then the owner can sign ownership over to you on the back of the registration.
