Coastal grants benefiting the Lake Erie Watershed or multiple counties within the watershed has totaled $770,917. This has allowed for projects totaling $1,543,537. The total grant and project amounts do not include those funded through Ohio's Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) which is also administered by the Office of Coastal Management. This project will expand the number of volunteers that clean up, monitor and collect beach data in Cuyahoga and Ottawa counties and bring the program to Erie County. It will focus on schools and increase the number of teams that lead an event as part of Coastweeks which is organized by the Ohio Lake Erie Commission.

Investigating Annual Variability in Pelagic Bird Densities

This project will investigate the inter-annual spatial and temporal variability of pelagic birds throughout Ohio waters of Lake Erie in an attempt to identify areas of the lake where wind energy facilities may or may not pose a threat to pelagic birds. Pelagic birds are those that spend most of their time in the open-water environment. A map will be produced along with a final report depicting locations of specific species by month.

Also, a new guide to state grants and programs that support Balanced Growth will be developed and placed on the web, creating a user-friendly way for locals to navigate these opportunities.

Nautical Archaeology Workshop and Shipwreck Survey

The Great Lakes Historical Society in conjunction with the Maritime Archaeological Survey Team will train divers and non-divers underwater archaeological methods by conducting an underwater archaeology conference and workshop and by managing the survey of a Lake Erie Shipwreck by volunteer divers. Also, survey findings of the Dundee will be prepared for publication.

This plan will achieve a focus for future water quality projects and decisions in agreement with agricultural practices, drinking water supplies, habitat restoration, floodplain protection and economic development and will be developed with stakeholder involvement.

This project will help pay for a coastal and watershed protection tool that can be used by the NCRCPD and other agencies to prioritize critical habitat preservation and restoration areas to improve and protect coastal water quality. An interactive Internet mapping application for regional planning and public education in the North Central Ohio Lake Erie Watershed will also be developed.
