Great Lakes Coastal Restoration Grants
Great Lakes Coastal Restoration Grants were part of a one time $30 million Congressional appropriation to the Great Lakes States. Ohio's portion of the funds were awarded 2001 and a portion re-appropriated in 2003. 
Seventeen projects were funded with Ohio's portion of the federal grants. Ohio's funding priorities were protection of critical coastal areas; water quality protection and coastal restoration; and sustainable development initiatives. Selected projects were consistent with Ohio Coastal Management Program priorities and helped implement the goals of the Lake Erie Protection and Restoration Plan.
Great Lakes Coastal Restoration Grants have enabled progress toward preserving coastal habitat, protecting and restoring riparian corridors and increasing public access. These efforts ensure diverse wildlife resources, reduce pollutants in Ohio's streams and facilitate the enjoyment of coastal and Lake Erie resources. The recipient's share of total project costs was 20 percent.
The funds were provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and were administered by the ODNR Office of Coastal Management. Proposals funded under this program were consistent with the Ohio Coastal Management Program (OCMP).

Fundamentals
- All projects had to be within the Lake Erie drainage basin (watershed) and had to demonstrate tangible benefits to coastal waters and resources.
- Grants were awarded on a competitive basis using the qualifying criteria described in the request for proposals.
- Other federal funding could not be used as the sponsor's cost (match). However, non-federal match could be in the form of cash and/or in-kind contributions.
- Proposals funded under this program are consistent with the Ohio Coastal Management Program under section 306 of the Coastal Zone Management Act.
