ODNR Division of Wildlife - Management Principles
Wild Resources

Our Management Principles

Management principles are the underlying beliefs which express our Division's most deeply held values or ideals. These statements will guide us as we plan, develop and implement projects. By making them part of our strategic plan, we will be reaffirming to our constituents, other agencies and our employees that these are the principles we believe are important.

  • Ohio citizens enjoy wildlife in many different ways. The Division recognizes that Ohio's citizens place a high value on their wildlife resource, and the Division will develop and implement programs which will enhance all Ohioan's enjoyment of the wildlife resources.
  • The Ohio General Assembly has given the Division of Wildlife the lead role in the management of Ohio's wildlife resource. The Division cannot accomplish this task alone. The Division of Wildlife seeks the cooperation and involvement of other government agencies and citizen groups to manage and protect the wildlife resource.
  • Fishing, hunting, and trapping are part of Ohio's heritage and its rich tradition and are appropriate uses for the renewable wildlife resource. The Division of Wildlife will manage wildlife resources allowing for the continuation of these traditions.
  • The Division of Wildlife supports the right of people to own and use guns in continuing the heritage of hunting and shooting sports. Further, the Division opposes enactment of laws which would interfere with those rights.
  • The Division of Wildlife values its employees and will provide high quality training and equipment to enhance their long-term success and allow them to perform at their highest possible level in service to the public.
  • The Division of Wildlife recognizes that both quality and quantity of habitat are necessary to maintain diverse wildlife populations. The Division will give priority to efforts to preserve, protect, enhance or acquire critical habitats, and increase its efforts to manage ecosystems.
  • The Division of Wildlife believes the fisheries, wildlife, enforcement and information and education functions best serve the resource and the public when integrated into one Division.
